Are Eccentric Exercises a Solution to Achilles Tendonopathy?

Achilles tendon pain, specifically Achilles tendonopathy is a common and sometimes debilitating problem. Tendons attach muscle to bone and the Calcaneal Tendon (Achilles tendon), attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone (calcaneus).

The Achilles tendon is found at the back of the ankle joint. It is the strongest and thickest tendon in the body and is formed by a fusion of the Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles as they travel down towards the heel. It was thought for some time that Achilles tendon pain was due to inflammation and for this reason it was commonly described as Achilles tendonitis (‘it’s meaning inflammation). We now know that the problem is in fact related to structural issues within the components of the tendon .Hence, the term tendonopathy has been adopted as a more accurate description of the problem.

Tendons transmit forces from muscle to bone and are subject to great tensile stresses. They contain tight bundles of organized collagen fibers. These loads create damage to the tendon fibers at a microscopic level. If the body’s repair rate is not able to match the damaged collagen fibers become disorganized and poor quality blood vessels are created in a process called neovascularization-Achilles tendonopathy.

It’s a difficult condition to treat. Strengthening of the calf muscle is used in eccentric training. Eccentric is a type of muscle action involving the muscle creating tension as it lengthens. The programme contains exercises for Gastrocnemius and Soleus. The action contributes to re-organisation of the collagen fibers and breaks down neovascularisation. This can increase pain levels initially and therapist supervision is necessary.

Treatment is systematic. Initially the act is treated; predisposing factors such as flat feet or poor footwear is investigated and rectified; calf muscles are strengthened. A Really Fun Way to Get an Ab Workout

I know you may think that working out your abs can’t be fun, but from the recent Ab Rocket reviews I have read it seems that this device actually makes it a lot of fun. A True Beginners Tape

I got the newbie tape which I thought would be a great introduction to Pilates, my primary complaint is with the size of the tape which is misleadingly mentioned to be “40 minutes”. I really like having the versatility to do either depending on how enough time I have with this Pilates teacher training DVD. I am confused and baffled by all of the reviewers who think this is an excellent video. Ana Caban is the best—fully informative without reducing the tempo, encouraging without that false perkiness which makes you want to slap somebody. She does a great job to be truly clear to a newbie, such as myself. Only then I understood what a great breathing technique and learning to engage your stomach muscles properly means. I have much less pain and creaking happening down there, too. I was relying on the Living Arts logo and it let me down. It’s difficult but just stick it out and do less reps at first which means you do not burn yourself out in early stages.

I New Way to Exercise

My husband is a member of the military and every morning they do personal training, which usually consists of running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc, but recently they have started a new type of exercise. They have started going to a gym located on base where they have a room full of upright exercise bikes. Each of the members of his company chooses a bike and gets on. There is an exercise specialist that sits at the front of the room and throws out different scenarios and they have to adjust their bikes according to the scenario that was said. For example if the instructor told them that they were going up a hill with a twenty five percent incline they would adjust there bikes to be going up a hill with a twenty five percent incline. They do this straight for an hour using scenarios where they are going up then down then up then flat again. It is never the same each time as the instructor mixes it up each week. The members of his company thoroughly enjoy this exercise routine.

Working out with a Friend

I am doing PX90 workout with my buddy John and we’re getting as ripped as ever. John has always been the geeky guy, but lately he’s been getting hit on by a ton of our female coworkers. He’s wearing clothes that show his awesome muscles. Too bad I’m married! I know the girls notice me too, but they can’t do anything about it because my wife works in the same building. She is their boss so they don’t want to start anything that risks their jobs. I’m pretty proud of John and I. The first few days into the program, we were aching like mad. We had never tried anything that intense before and it was just beating us down for a bit. I’m pretty happy with the way I look now. My wife is just all over me when she can be. The program has brought many good things to me and I will continue to do it.
